Baden Wurttemberg is lush with sites in the North. But as you get closer to the southern border of Germany castles again become somewhat rare. This is home to the black forest, a particularly dense area of forest that perhaps did not lend itself to the application of castle warfare.
The Rhein river continues its journey
along the western edge of this state as it travels westward from
the Lake Constance and bends sharply north toward the real castle
country that begins at a line drawn from about Baden Baden eastward.

Unlike Rheinland-Palatinate, in
this state the river Rhein is not the host
to the castle sites. Most castles in Baden-Wurttemberg are up
in the hills, on rocky outcroppings and off the beaten path. My
favorite castle for many years was Lichtenstein and is still one
I recommend seeing. Though somewhat small its location is quite
impressive, it is open to the public and tours are hosted. Another
must see here is Hohenzollern. Hohenzollern, when approached from
the East, looks every bit the fairytale castle with towering multiple
spheres and the way it caps the crest of the hill as though it
were a natural part of the formation. It is a larger castle and
provides all the amenities and tours. Both these castles can be
taken in in one trip.
