Bavaria is probably the most pleasant of the German states for the visitor and among the most rewarding for the castle hunter. If there remains an area whose people retain any of that old country attitude it might be the Bavarians. The countryside is full of rolling hills with great views seemingly designed just for the placement of castles.
There are two very special castles in Bavaria and if your time and travels are limited these should be at the top of your list. The Burghausen castle in Burghausen, east of Munich, overlooks the Salzach river that divides Germany and Austria. It holds the record for being the longest castle in Germany at nearly a half mile from one end to the other and is in remarkable condition.
The other must-see is the Kaiserburg that makes up the center of old Nurnberg. This is an especially significant emperial castle and again is in remarkable condition. Both provide tours and published histories that make the visit more interesting and rewarding for English speaking visitors.
