There is, in my experience, an invisible line starting at Berlin and extending eastward above which there are virtually no medieval castle to be found. There are some to be sure, but they are hard to find. As mentioned in an earlier page, the frequency of castle sites begins to increase below this line and, by the time you have reached Bavaria and other states at the same latitude castles become quite a common sight.

In Brandenburg and Saxony Anhalt there are many sites that promise to delight the castle hunter. But I have had few opportunities to travel since reunification and the number of sites listed on these pages is simply a reflection of my limited opportunities. In my first trip the wall had been down only a matter of weeks and while there was no one to question my crossing the still existing border, I later discovered I was not in that portion of the country legally. Therefore I had to remain low key so as not to be discovered. I was however stopped twice by East German police. Fortunately they were as confused as I and I was sent on my way without hassle both times.

What was most interesting at the time was the backwardness of that section of the country. It was as though I had been transported in time. Not quite mediaval time, but close.
