Ruins/open to public/restaurant & hotel within
1125
1137 to Count von Andrechs-Meranien in marriage

If you have been to other portions of this site you may recognize this grotesque. It was at Giechburg, on an interior wall of the bailey that I found my young friend and he has sort of been the mascot for "Roads to Ruins". These guys are actually not that easy to find even on these medieval buildings so, though not a gargoyle, he has become a good friend.

Giechburg, or Burg Giech, is a ruin NE of Bamberg. There is an excellent restaurant on the site and a new hotel in the actual building, not a new building. The ruins are open to the public at no charge. Visitors can drive right up to the walls and wander about at will. Like many castles Giechburg is an impressive image as you aproach from the main road. Nothing is being done (at my last visit) to restore this location.
