The southern 60% of Hesse is where
I have had the best luck in finding this state's castles. This
is an important part of Germany's industrial and international
repute and the money to maintain the condition of these often
massive and expensive buildings is perhaps more readily available
here.
Part of the state borders the Rhein river, although not the most castle intensive section of the Rhein. However, and I have yet to ascertain the accuracy of this, I am led to understand that the oldest stone manor is somewhere in the area where the Rhein touches Hesse's southern limits. This is one lead I must follow up on during my next trip.
